can anyone advise on recording live music onto mp3 players? i currently use a sony Mini disc recorder with an external sony T mic but am thinking of switching to an iriver H120 since this has the option to use an external mic for recording. currently if i have a lesson or want to record one of my gigs live, i use my md player.
does anyone have experience of the H120 iriver as far as the recording facility for professional level recording goes, is concerned. OR, can you recommend something else of good value. i don't want to spend a fortune and odn't need camera functions necessarily.
cheers
charlie

before it seems as if I'm bashing the Iriver players, I can say that my H120 is a fine mp3 player and portable hard disk and I'll take it over an Ipod anyday.

UNFORTUNATELY, the Iriver stinks at being a professional recorder in my opinion. If you use google, or search http://www.misticriver.net for the phrase "H120 Recording Click" I will guarantee a ton of hits. The H120 puts a small click into a recording made, using the internal and external mics, and line in port, when the H120 flushes its memory buffer to the hard disk.

I have personally tried the 3 inputs listed above, but I don't have any optical equipment to test optical with. The internal mic picks up the click and the harddrive spin up/down, making a very high pitched whining noise that makes this feature good only for short voice notes (IMHO). The external mic can make decent recordings, but again, the click is there and semi-noticeable. The line-in, depending on the music makes good recordings, dependant on what mixer, etc. you use, but the click is very evident, since it's not being covered up by hiss or harddisk noise. As I said, I haven't tried optical, but I fear the same fate happens there too. Try google or the misticriver site listed above, they'll have all the answers.

Now, after dissing my beloved H120, i suggest the antique, but stellar Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 for recording performances. I owned this player and am half sad i traded it for my H120. It's slightly bigger than the average discman, but the wealth of recording options is great. Plus, the unit is durable. It survived four 3-foot drops from a school desk to the tile floor with no damage whatsoever. My only suggestion with this player is to find spare faceplates. The tabs on mine broke within a week, but a little spot of epoxy fixed that for me - my faceplate just became permanent.

Other than that, I'm not sure of other MP3 HD recorders. I have not tried iriver's new H320, 340, etc. or their smaller H10 (comparable to the ipod mini). These may have recording features similar to the H120, they may not. Unfortunately, I must go and can't do more research now. Hope this helps.

Good luck, and hope your gigs do well. If you get a recording you wanna share, send it along to the above address, along with what equipment you ended up buying.
